What Is God Up To?

In light of the events of 2020 and the most recent events of 2021 many have drawn harsh conclusions about what God is up to.

Some made prophetic declarations about God’s plan for President Trump. Their declarations have proven false and fruitless.

Some have made connections between what has been happening and “end times” prophecies.

Many have turned to wild-eyed conspiracy theories and theorists to find answers that make sense of all of the crazy.

Many simply have no idea what is going on and admit as much.

But what conclusions should be drawn? Where should we be looking? What should we think about all of this?

Did God really speak through those supposed prophets? Did we mess it up somehow? You can see my answer to that question in my previous post.

But is God still working in this land? Has he abandoned us to our fate?

Is this the beginning of the “end times?” Or is there hope for the future?

Should we be concerned about the crazy conspiracies out there? Should we just throw up our hands and say “forget it all?”

God’s Not Done With Us

I want to argue that God’s not done with this land. He is not done with his plan in our world. I don’t believe that things are on a downward spiral into the dark abyss.

I may begin a whole new series on the topic to make the argument forcefully and winsomely. But I don’t believe that the Scriptures tell us anywhere that things must go from bad to worse for the remainder of human history before the end. I believe that we always have a chance to make the world better.

God intends for us to make disciples of all nations. He intends for us to love him with all of our being and to love those around us as we love ourselves. That kind of love paired with the truth of Christ’s death for sinners and resurrection for their justification changes things. The gospel is the power of God for salvation. People won over by the love of God and the good news of Jesus are different. They live differently. They love differently. They think differently.

God’s plan to redeem the world through the spread of his kingdom has not changed. He is not done with his plan. God’s promise to watch over his children has not changed.

What Did Jesus Say?

Jesus promised 2 really important truths that I want to encourage you with during this time.

1. His kingdom will grow and spread through the efforts of his people.

“He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” Matthew 13:33

The leaven (yeast) of the kingdom of heaven will spread throughout the whole measure of flour. It just will. The kingdom of God cannot be stopped. God will bring his kingdom yet. He will not stop, he will not sleep or slumber until he has accomplished all of his purposes. The gates of hell will not prevail against the church of God.

Don’t give up and don’t lose heart. Christ wins. You have a part to play in speaking the truth of the Gospel and teaching the next generation about his goodness and grace. Be faithful and it will spread.

2. God is in complete control and looks after his people like a loving father.

“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:28-31

Our God is a loving father. Not one sparrow falls to the ground apart from him. He not only knows about when the sparrows fall. He is in charge of when they fall. And he has numbered even the hairs of your head and he cares far more for you than any birds. He watches over his children with love and care.

Don’t fear the world. They can only kill you. You, Christian, belong to the one who can raise the dead. Don’t fear the circumstances. You, Christian, belong to the sovereign king of all creation who works all things according to His good purposes. (Eph 1:11)

Things might get worse. They might get better. We don’t know. We haven’t been promised either. But what we have been promised is that God’s kingdom will reign and spread and God’s people are in his hand no matter what happens to them.

Don’t give up. Don’t give in to crazy ideas. Don’t give up on God’s plans, he hasn’t.

In light of these truths. I wrote a song for encouragement and remembrance. It’s called “God’s not done.” It focuses on these truths amid confusion and fear.

You can check it out here on Soundcloud for free download. It is also now available on all major streaming and music download services. Spotify, Apple Music, Itunes, Amazon Music, Pandora, Youtube, etc. Just search for “God’s Not Done” by South Side Baptist Church Worship.

I pray that it will be an encouragement to you and your family in this confusing season of life.

Here are the lyrics:

The ground beneath us shifts like sand Confusion seems to reign
is there a place for us to stand?
Do we cry out in vain?
when everything begins to shake
We cling to what he’s said
Apart from our Father not a hair will fall from our head

God’s not done in this land
God’s not done with his plan
We are not forsaken and not abandoned

We must not forget
God’s not done with his plan
We are safe in his hand
We are not forgotten and not abandoned

He’ll bring his kingdom yet

The road behind has been hard Ahead may be as well
No matter what the road may hold God’s word abides still
The king is on his throne
the world can’t change this truth
The nations may rage in vain but Christ will see us through

We will trust in
We will trust in
We will trust in the Lord our God
